Certain handbags transcend their role as mere accessories, evolving into true emblems of their era. Such is the case with Balenciaga’s City Bag – a creation by Nicolas Ghesquière in the early 2000s that nearly remained a footnote in the brand’s archives. However, thanks to Kate Moss, it transformed into one of the most recognizable fashion hits of the decade. Now, this legendary bag is once again in the spotlight: Pierpaolo Piccioli has presented a new couture rendition, proving that true style icons never lose their relevance.

Over its existence, the iconic model has been reinterpreted numerous times, reflecting the creative vision of Balenciaga’s successive creative directors. For the Fall/Winter 2020/2021 season, Demna unveiled the Neo Classic, a contemporary take on the cult bag. He experimented with proportions, creating exaggeratedly large and miniature versions, stiffening the silhouette, releasing the model in vibrant monochrome colors, adorning it with graffiti, and using deliberately aged leather. Despite all these transformations, the City Bag has consistently retained its distinctive identity.

Following Pierpaolo Piccioli’s appointment as Balenciaga’s creative director, it was almost inevitable that the City Bag would become a cornerstone accessory of his debut collection. During the Spring/Summer 2026 presentation, the designer showcased several new variations of the model: crafted from chocolate suede, black and beige leather, as well as a striking fuchsia version. The streamlined forms underscored Piccioli’s intention to restore the bag’s elegance without sacrificing its inherent character.
The most significant surprise awaited brand enthusiasts during Pierpaolo Piccioli’s inaugural couture show for the Fall/Winter 2026/2027 season. It was there that the designer unveiled an entirely new interpretation of the iconic bag. Only two models graced the runway, yet they emerged as some of the collection’s most striking accessories.
One iteration was fashioned entirely from silver metal, while the other was encrusted with a pink crystal mesh, creating the appearance of a precious jewel. These complemented Piccioli’s architectural ensembles: a milky white T-shirt dress and an elegant coat crafted from crepe, silk, and wool, paired with trousers adorned with organza petals.
