Olivia Rodrigo is, quite literally, unraveling. The pop star just kicked off the tour for her third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, and there was so much to unpack. The album, which was released back in June, takes listeners through every stage of a relationship, from the initial butterflies of a crush to the rush of falling in love to the heartbreaking disillusion of a partnership. Here, she took her storytelling to the next level, bringing her words to life through her setlist, stage design, and, of course, costumes.
Split up into seasons, the set opened with a stage covered in thousands of (fake) blooming flowers, upon which a Dilara Fındıkoğlu babydoll-clad Rodrigo charmed the crowd with hits such as “Drop Dead,” “So American,” and “You + Me = <3.” From there, spring turned into summer, and the artist changed into a bedazzled tank and hot-pink shorts for passionate, fiery renditions of “My Way” and protest song “Serena Joy.”
Fall saw a purple leather minidress from R&M Leathers with a choker (and fan favorites “Stupid Song” and “Maggots for Brains”), and winter rounded things out with a white pleated dress and some of the singer’s most emotional ballads, from debut single “Driver’s License” to this album’s heart-aching “The Cure.”
During this final number, the arena started raining on Rodrigo, and the downpour appeared to wash away her dress, revealing a red latex layer underneath. Designed by Hussein Chalayan and coined the “unraveled dress” by stylist duo Chloe and Chenelle Delgadillo, the piece was crafted from a water-soluble fabric that disintegrated when wet for a dramatic pre-encore finale.
For the encore itself, Rodrigo was back in spring, finishing things off (for real this time) with a simple white tank and low-rise jeans. Still wet from the rain, she performed a hit from each of her albums: “Deja Vu” from Sour, “All American Bitch” from Guts, and “Expectations” from You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.
